twitter-birdAchieving landmarks seems to have become a routine for major social networking sites these days. Just few days back, Facebook crossed the 200-million-users mark and extended its lead from arch-rival MySpace. And now, it is Twitter that has entered the arena and doing exceedingly well in just a short span of time. The micro-blogging and social networking site has accumulated a staggering 17 million U.S. visitors in April and grown 3000% compared to a year ago. That’s indeed massive!

What led to the increasing popularity of Twitter is the tremendous exposure it received through media, bloggers around the world, and of course the presence of top-notch celebrities on the site. Hence, it is no wonder that the site managed to jump 83% from March to April and became a hot destination for users in the U.S. In fact, Twitter is not only growing in the U.S. but also in Europe and the developing economies – the reason why it promises to show sustainable growth in the longer term too.

However, as we witness the growing number of users on Twitter, it remains to be seen whether they stay active on the site or not. Ultimately, it is not the number of users, but the number of active users that decides the life and fate of a social networking site. So far, Twitter has managed to engage its users (including businesses) and create a powerful brand image in the market. Now, it all depends on how it maintains or betters that image in the times to come.
