Celebrities and Social Networking

Posted by Vaibhav Kalamdani on April 25, 2009

Since the last couple of years, the popularity of social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, and more recently Twitter has attracted not only common users, but also celebrities from across the world. Not surprisingly, as soon as a celeb becomes a member of any particular social networking site, the popularity of that site shoots up by being in news throughout the Web. One such example is that of Oprah Winfrey, who recently became a member of Twitter, a fast-growing micro-blogging and social networking site.

Looking at the rapid growth of user-base on social networking sites, it is interesting to see personalities from the entertainment as well as sports industry joining them and becoming a part of the site. Celebrities who used to prefer staying away from the media and paparazzi are now exposed to the entire world, at their very own choice. Probably, this is a smart choice because of the following three reasons:

• Gaining lost popularity: Celebs who haven’t been in the limelight since a long time and are on the verge of being forgotten by people, tend to benefit in some way by joining a well-known social networking site. This allows them to retain their identity by allowing people to track whatever they do and say.

• Connecting with fans: Visit any social networking site where your favourite artists are present, and you will come across several people following them already. The ability to voice out your thoughts makes this platform useful for celebs to connect with their fans and generate a huge fan following, which helps them build their brand image.

• Using social media as a PR tool: Public relations (PR) plays a critical role in the success of any artist. Social networking and media sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. provide celebrities an exposure to their audiences without incurring any direct costs. At times of difficulty or during controversies, they get a chance to justify their actions and explain their motive clearly, thereby influencing the thinking and behavior of their fans towards them.

To verify how successful social networking has been to famous personalities in attracting a huge fan-base, here are few examples of the ones present on Twitter:
