Popularizing Your Blog Without Marketing

Posted by Vaibhav Kalamdani on April 7, 2009

Making your blog known to the global Internet users is a challenging task, especially because of the large number of blogs existing today. Choose any topic, and you will find that there are several blogs already available on the same or similar subject. This makes it even trickier to carve out a name for your blog on the Web.

While we know the importance of social media in marketing your blog or rather any website, it is also important to remember that social media marketing is not the only solution. There are several things that go into the making of a blog, such as the topic of the blog, basic knowledge about the subject, ability to communicate and content creation.

Users generally come to know about websites or blogs through search engines, social media sites, traditional marketing tools such as advertising and print, and word-of-mouth publicity. However, since most of us cannot afford heavy expenses on the traditional marketing tools, the remaining options (search engines, social media and word-of-mouth) are what play a role in bringing traffic to our blog.

Secondly, it is not necessary that those who blog know how to use social media tools to market their content. For instance, there might be people who simply cannot understand the technicalities that go into affixing various social media tools on their blog. Also, there might be people who are new to the social media world and do not know how to go about promoting themselves.

During such time, search engines play a very crucial role to help people find your blog. Even though you are not aware of the social media concept or experiencing difficulties in comprehending it, there is one thing that can still do wonders to your blog, which is the quality of your content. And it is the search engines that drive users to their destinations on the basis of keywords and content quality.

Previously, when I discussed the 8 basic rules of successful blogging, I said that your challenge as a blogger is to make people visit your blog repeatedly and speak about it to others. One of the biggest reasons why people keep visiting a blog again and again is the quality and uniqueness of the content. Why are blogs like Mashable and TechCrunch one of the leading Web destinations today? It is because of their content, which ultimately leads people to speak positive about them through social media or offline publicity.

However, at the end, it is not that marketing does not play any role. Marketing is (no doubt) important, but it is not the only thing that will decide the fate of your blog. It will just provide a strong support for you to get your website or blog known to more and more number of people, which can act as an advantage over your other blog competitors.

So, are you the one who has been able to popularize your blog without marketing? If yes, do let us know through comments to this post.
