SMEs are aiming at Twitter to trim their marketing expenses and keep in touch with their clients, according to a recent survey conducted by O2. It is estimated that 700,000 small businesses are already on Twitter to promote themselves.

The poll, which included 500 small enterprises with employee strength of below 20, found that 17 percent of the 4.6 million UK-based SMEs are already using Twitter to send an astonishing 3 million ‘tweets’ each day. Moreover, it was found that more than a quarter (28 percent) SMEs signed up in the last four weeks alone.

When asked about the benefits of using Twitter as a marketing tool, two-third of the businesses stated cost cutting, as they considered Twitter not only useful for marketing, but also to recruit new staff. O2 estimated that up to £5000 were saved on marketing and recruitment by 16 percent of businesses since signing up the service, while one-third said they saved up to £1,000.

Other benefits of using Twitter include enhancing their business profile and communicating with a wide audience without incurring any cost. Nearly 75 percent used Twitter to market and promote their businesses, while 42 percent used it to maintain relations with suppliers and customers. As far as competition is concerned, 34 percent said they used the network to monitor their competitors’ moves.

The Solution to Recession:

Using Twitter is a great example of how contemporary technology is being embraced during the on-going recession, said Simon Devonshire, head of small businesses marketing, O2.

According to him, small businesses using converged devices like smartphones with Twitter signifies a huge opportunity to further raise their business profile and boost efficiency.

4 out of 10 SMEs employed Twitter more than Facebook or LinkedIn, while 68 percent said they used Twitter more regularly than blogs.
