Christmas 2008 Brings Rejoice to Facebook

Social Networks were very busy during this year’s Christmas, especially the leading networking portal Facebook. The online giant witnessed a record-breaking traffic ever in the United Kingdom this year on the very special occasion of Christmas.

According to online statistics firm HitWise, Facebook kept the UK audience busy as users accessing Facebook went up by an astonishing 69 percent as compared to Christmas 2007. Friends and families flocked over the site to wish their dear ones on this big day, thereby creating history in the books of Facebook.

The popular social network gained so much attention that it accounted for 1 out of every 22 Web visits on that day in the UK, as per Hitwise.

Though Google bettered Facebook with more than 1 in every 12 Internet visits, the latter maintained its dominance as far as the social networking industry is concerned. On the whole, social networking portals settled for 10 percent of the entire UK Web visits, HitWise stated.

Also, video-sharing site YouTube surpassed Microsoft’s Live Mail (formerly known as Hotmail) for the very first time, making it sit comfortably on the third spot after Facebook in UK’s most visited site list.

Though Christmas brought delight for the social media sector, online retail took a backseat as traffic reduced by 4.9 percent year on year.
